Now, I’m not new to this whole parenting thing but I am new to the issue of biting. Zman never bit when he was little (but was bit frequently while in day care) and the Drama Queen did it once and never attempted to do it again.
This brings me to child number 3, the infamous Tatertot who is 20 months old!
AKA—The Biter Extraordinaire.
Just when you think he is being the sweetest little thing ever and he’s all nice and snuggly….
CHOMP!
And we aren’t talking a little nibble here and there, we are talking a full on leave marks ohmygodthathurt kind of bite!
I swear, he can bite just as hard as I can.
He leaves marks.
He bites me, Hardworking Hubby, Zman and Drama Queen and usually it’s without any warning and for no reason whatsoever!
Now, we’ve tried redirecting him when he bites.
We’ve said No Biting! in that mean evil parent voice numerous times.
We’ve given him teething rings, teething toys and even suckers to give him something else to bite but nothing seems to work and I think we are close to holding him down and yanking all of his teeth out one at a time. ( Come on, you know this is something we would never do and is a total exaggeration!)
So my dear Mommy friends in the Blogosphere and Twitterverse, we need your help, advice and tips to get this kid to stop munching on us like we are his afternoon snack!
Please let us know how you’ve dealt with a biter and what worked for you.
For those who follow me on Twitter or Facebook you are well aware of what this post will entail, for those who just stop by to check up on me….here’s the scoop.
My dear sweet little Tatertot is teething. He currently has his two front teeth on both the bottom and the top. When those teeth arrived, there were no signs of a teething baby. He was simply Tatertot — my happy, fun, well-behaved, sleep 12 hours toddler. Well—–all of that has changed over the last week. He’s teething BIG TIME right now—–all 4 of his molars are trying to surface (I guess I should be happy that they are all attempting to make their great appearance at once)! Needless to say, my happy, fun, well-behaved, sleep 12 hours toddler…..has disappeared! For the last week, he has been the cry, whine, scream, bite, crabby (yet cute) sleep a few hours here and there get up 300 million times a night kind of toddler. This new child that has taken over my son’s body has allowed me to get NO sleep, not much quiet time and a HUGE headache! I’ve been giving him Tylenol before bed, rubbing his gums and helping him any way that I can but it has been to no avail. That all changed yesterday/last night….when I caved and hit my breaking point!
——————>>>>> Side Note: My husband works 3rd shift, so he is gone between 9:30pm & 6:30am Sunday-Thursday and the 2 nights that he is home, Tatertot sleeps straight through the night <<<<<————————
Yesterday and the night before was hell for me! Every time I attempted to go to bed and was just about asleep…I’d hear that incessant cry/scream coming from the next room and I’d be right back out of bed. Finally at about 5am yesterday morning (4/29/09) I was able to fall asleep ——- for 45 minutes that is and then……there it was again! I went and grabbed the little dude, and we sat in the living room snuggled up watching TV until daddy walked in the door @ 6:30 —- I took one look at my Hardworking Hubby, who had just put in his 8 hours at work and said,
“It’s my turn to sleep now, right”?
He looked at my eyes and could see how tired I was and simply replied,
“Sweetie, go to bed”.
So- I did! The little Tatertot was up and down the rest of the morning, so after 3 hours of sleep, we switched spots and I took the little man. By the time the Hardworking Hubby got up at 6pm I had hit my breaking point….he walked in the living room and I said,
“Go to the ATM, take out some cash, go to the liquor store and get me a bottle of blackberry brandy and a bottle of wine”!
To sum it all up, I got 8 hours of sleep last night and Tatertot got 10, woke up when daddy got home, had breakfast and went back down for 2 more hours! All is quiet in our house again!!!
